Witching Hour

Larry MacDougall is a Canadian fantasy artist with a special affinity for witches.

“Old hags who live by themselves in the woods, haunting abandoned towers, casting spells, mixing potions, and flying about at night on broomsticks .... My imagination kindles at the very thought of these ragged, bent, and patched old sinners.” (Witching Hour: The Art of Larry MacDougall. Cartouche, 2003)

Fantastic—not even, it seems, altogether human sometimes—his crones project the gleeful indifference to what’s “right” that I think partly accounts for witches’ eternal appeal.
